Let's play some baseball word association. I'll name two players and you tell me what they have in common: Matt Moore and Babe Ruth. Stumped? What can a pitcher and a hitter have in common except if maybe a pitcher hit a homerun? Well, if you happen to work for the Elias Sports Bureau or are 96 years old, you may remember that Babe Ruth was a great pitcher before he was a great hitter. The Babe was a such a good pitcher that he would have been a Hall-of-Famer even if he never picked up a stick and became the Sultan of Swat. Anyway, with Matt Moore's win over the Baltimore Orioles yesterday, he and Babe Ruth are the only two southpaws under the age of 25 to start a season with an 8-0 record. If you are old enough to remember Babe Ruth accomplishing this feat, you may also recall the sinking of the Lusitania, the beginning of Prohibition, and of course the Great Depression. If you are not well-versed in your American history, I'll try to put this into context with baseball history. This pitching achievement spans 10 years longer than the Curse of the Bambino which took place from 1918-2004. That's right, Babe Ruth was a part of the Red Sox when he started the 1917 season at 8-0. Back then, the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry was in its infantile stage and Matt Moore's team, the Tampa Bay Rays, were 83 years away from establishment.
